Here comes some of my preferred news sources I use on a daily basis to keep up with world events. I strongly recommend everyone to use different sources depending on the date and the geographic location of an event in order to get a balanced approach, and the most accurate picture as possible. Though in order to do so, you have to speak foreign languages, especially English.

Newspapers and news agencies

1) The New York Times
... is a daily newspaper founded in 1851 and published in New York City. The largest metropolitan newspaper in the United States. The Times has had a strong presence on the Web since 1995. It's website is the most popular American online newspaper website as of December 2008, receiving over 18 million unique visitors in that month. The paper's motto, as printed in the upper left-hand corner of the front page, is "All the News That's Fit to Print."

2) International Herald Tribune
The IHT is a widely read English-language international newspaper. It combines the resources of its own correspondents with those of The New York Times and is printed at 35 sites throughout the world, for sale in more than 180 countries. While the IHT shares many columnists with The New York Times, it has its own voice, particularly in the field of culture. As of 2003, the IHT is completely owned by The New York Times Company, after that firm purchased the 50% stake owned by the Washington Post Company on December 30, 2002.

The takeover ended a 35-year partnership between the two domestic competitors, and the newspaper has been subtitled "The Global Edition of the New York Times". In 2008, the NYT Company announced the merger of the New York Times and IHT websites. As of March 29, 2009, the IHT website is now the Global Edition of The New York Times. The new site is at global.nytimes.com. Links to all IHT stories redirect to this main page and not the same stories at the new site.

Thanks to a free trial subscription I had the luck to read the paper on a daily basis, and I have to say it is a very good news source. Even the price is not that bad compared those of Hungarian papers.

3) Foreign Policy
Founded in 1970 by Samuel Huntington and Warren Demian Manshel, and now published by the Slate Group in Washington, D.C., FOREIGN POLICY is the premier, award-winning magazine of global politics, economics, and ideas. Their mission is to explain how the world works-in particular, how the process of globalization is reshaping nations, institutions, cultures, and, more fundamentally, our daily lives. The magazine's readers include some of the most influential leaders in business, government, and other professional arenas throughout the US and more than 160 other countries.

Beginning in January 2009, ForeignPolicy.com is relaunching as a vibrant, daily online magazine. Rather than merely complementing the print edition, the site stands on its own as one of the Web's premier destinations for international news and opinion. FP has recruited some of the sharpest writers in international politics to look beyond the day's headlines to uncover overlooked stories and unique angles. Passport, the award-winning blog by FP's editors, has been joined by a host of new bloggers, including Tom Ricks, Stephen Walt, Marc Lynch, Laura Rozen, and Daniel Drezner.

5) The Wall Street Journal
...is an English-language international daily newspaper published by Dow Jones & Company, a division of News Corporation, in New York City, with Asian and European editions. The Journal is the largest newspaper in the United States by circulation, which primarily covers U.S. and international business, and financial news and issues. Its name derives from Wall Street in New York City, the heart of the financial district. I recommend the online version of the Europe Edition, especially the 'World' news section (its free).

6) The Los Angeles Times
...is a daily newspaper published in Los Angeles, California, since 1881. In 2008 it was the second-largest metropolitan newspaper in circulation in the United States and the fourth most widely distributed newspaper in the country. If you are interested in Mexico's drug war I can recommend you the 'Mexico Under Siege' part of the online version.

7) Cable News Network
..., almost always referred to by its initialism CNN, is a major U.S. cable news network founded in 1980 by Ted Turner. Upon it's launch, CNN was the first network to provide 24-hour television news coverage, and the first all-news television network in the United States. CNN debuted its news website CNN.com on August 30, 1995. The site attracted growing interest over its first decade and is now one of the most popular news websites in the world.

8) BBC News

The department is the world's largest broadcast news organisation and generates about 120 hours of radio and television output each day, as well as online news coverage. Sources on Israel

1) Haaretz
... (lit. "The Land", originally Hadshot Ha'aretz – "News of the Land") is Israel's oldest daily newspaper. It was founded in 1918 and is now published in both Hebrew and English. The English edition is published and sold together with the International Herald Tribune. Both Hebrew and English editions can be read on the Internet. Compared to other mass circulation papers in Israel, Haaretz uses smaller headlines and print. Less space is devoted to pictures, and more to political analysis. Its editorial pages are considered influential among government leaders. Despite its relatively low circulation, Haaretz is considered Israel's most influential daily newspaper.

2) The Jerusalem Post
...is an Israeli daily English-language broadsheet newspaper, founded on December 1, 1932 by Gershon Agron as The Palestine Post. It is published from Sunday to Friday, with no edition appearing on Saturday. The Jerusalem Post also publishes an online edition found at, and colloquially referred to as, Jpost.com. The site contains archives that go back to 1989.

TV-programmes

1) Fareed Zakaria GPS

...is a flagship BBC television programme, consisting of in-depth half-hour one-on-one interviews. It is broadcast four days a week (Monday to Thursday) on BBC World News and the BBC News channel. Launched in 1997, much of its worldwide fame is due to its global reach via BBC World.

...is the CNN's Chief International Correspondent Christiane Amanpour's live global interview program, which run Monday to Thursday at 2100 CET, with a round-up of the best of the week on Fridays on CNN International and Sundays on CNN in the United States.

Other agencies and Think Tanks

1) The International Crisis Group
...is now generally recognised as the world’s leading independent, non-partisan, source of analysis and advice to governments, and intergovernmental bodies like the United Nations, European Union and World Bank, on the prevention and resolution of deadly conflict. Crisis Group was founded in 1995 as an international non-governmental organisation on the initiative of a group of well known transatlantic figures who despaired at the international community’s failure to anticipate and respond effectively to the tragedies in the early 1990s of Somalia, Rwanda and Bosnia.

2) The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is an independent US Government agency responsible for providing national security intelligence to senior US policymakers. Everybody knows that. But here is The CIA's online World Factbook, which provides information on the history, people, government, economy, geography, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for 266 world entities. The online Factbook is updated bi-weekly. It is definitely a good source of data for those interested in this kind of stuff, especially for international security policy experts.

3) BP (formerly British Petroleum) is a British global energy company that is also the third largest global energy and the 4th largest company in the world, providing its customers with fuel for transportation, energy for heat and light, retail services and petrochemicals products for everyday items. The BP's Reports and Publications section is a very good source of data for those interested in energy security or natural resources. They have a large amount of information available to view or download. It is worth to check it out.

"Learn to concentrate, to give all your attention to the thing at hand, and then to be able to put it aside and go on to the next thing without confusion. Actually, you can finish any task much quicker if you concentrate on it for fifteen minutes than if you give it divided attention for thirty." -- Eleanor Roosevelt, You Learn by Living (1960).
